Safety Equipment for your business this winter

November 30th, 2009 by admin

This winter we are likely to get a fair bit of cold weather, with colder weather there is usually the frost, ice and snow which can become hazardous on the pathways and roads. As an employer you should be aware of any potential hazards there are on your business’ premises. These hazards include ice on pathways, black ice on service roads and car parks and other cold weather related issues.

There are a few ways in which you can make any hazards known to your workers or members of the public, these measures include salt gritting equipment which should be used to clear any ice on roads and pathways. We have all seen the grit trucks out on motorways and main roads usually early in the morning whilst we’re deicing our cars, unfortunately these trucks do not grit all roads and so you may find that roads and pathways on your business property do not get gritted leaving them as hazards for motorists and pedestrians.

Gritting your car park will save plenty of knocks and bumps that could happen as workers and visitors enter the car park. You may think that the task of doing this will be a strenuous one using a bucket of salt or a shovel. There are now grit spreaders that you can walk like a lawn mower and it will spread the grit evenly ensuring your car park thaws quickly.

It’s important that footpaths are also kept clear of ice too as there could be people who trip and fall who could claim compensation against your business. There are safety signs that you can buy that even display a warning only if the temperature drops to a certain level. This serves as a clear notice to the pedestrian that the weather is cold enough to produce ice on walkways and so they should be careful when walking. Signage like this informs the pedestrian but also can prove your business has made effort to warn pedestrians which is important to protect your business.

It is important that you pay attention to the weather forecast for your area when winter comes as you need to ideally have car parks and pathways cleared early on and before workers arrive. If you make sure that you have the right safety equipment in place before the cold weather then you’ll be ready to make sure your business is safe even if the roads and paths are covered with ice or snow.

Shop online for safety signs, winter safety equipment and rock salt to make sure your business is safe and frost free this winter

Transport Chair | Patient Transportation Should Be the Least of a Hospital’s Worries

November 30th, 2009 by admin

Transport Chair | Patient Transportation Should Be the Least of a Hospital's Worries

Patient transportation is a necessity in any hospital or other institution.  The clients have to be moved from one locale to another for everything from tests to surgeries to emergencies to discharge.

Unfortunately, due to the deficiencies in most extant wheelchairs, this process can wind up taking up far more time than it should, leading to irate staff, patients, families, etc., as well as raising costs through extra man-hours, not to mention equipment failure and theft.

The wheelchair itself is an incredible invention that has allowed for mobility and levels of independence for people who are physically incapacitated to some degree or another.  As well as those who provide care and companionship to those who would never have had.

There was a time when para and quadriplegics were confined to beds, and maybe couches or porches if there was someone who could transport them that far.  The wheelchair has enabled them to rejoin a world they never should have been removed from.  At the same time, it’s been a boon to the medical and other people moving services at the same time.  Wheelchairs revolutionized patient transportation.

Unfortunately, along with all these benefits has come a mindset that if something works for one area, it should work for all.  This has led to few changes in the chairs themselves.

Wheelchairs have gone forward in a straight line, moving from wood to metal in construction and incorporating better materials as well as controls that can be operated by the most mobility-impaired among us.  However, no later movement has allowed for increased efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness in the areas where independent living was not the primary concern.

When a person with mobility issues is in a hospital, a chair geared for patient transportation will make far more sense than what would be used to facilitate independent moving.  Even someone with more general health issues, this makes hiking down miles of corridors to the X-ray room MRI inadvisable.

There are numerous reasons for this, including the health and safety of both patient and staff.  For example, a chair that can only be moved by the attendant, rather than the patient will avoid someone who should not be moving on her own from incurring injury thus costing her, her insurance, and the hospital both time and money.

A further advantage of wheelchairs built solely for institutional use is that they can be designed to take up less space.  Why does this matter?  If the wheelchairs take up less room, they can be placed in one centralized location without impacting day-to-day operations.

They will also allow for better and more rapid movement through halls and rooms.  This is vital in emergent situations as well as reducing the amount of time a patient needs to spend being transported from bed to exam room and back again.

One of the biggest advantages in chairs designed specifically with patient transport in mind is in cost effectiveness.  While the beginning cost may be higher, chairs that can be nested against one another saves time and space.
They work like shopping carts in that they are easily secured.  However, they are not easily stolen unlike shopping carts.  They will pay for themselves in short order, by not having to be replaced because they have wandered out the door under their “own” steam.

The Value of a Good Wheelchair

November 30th, 2009 by admin

The Value of a Good Wheelchair

These days almost no one has to ask what a wheelchair is.  That is both good and bad.  It is bad, of course, because this means that there are still far too many people in the world with moderate to debilitating mobility issues.  It is good because without wheelchairs, the quality of life of persons who have such issues would be severely limited.

The invention of the wheelchair hundreds of years ago was certainly a boon to those few who had access to such an item, but at the time the technology and skill needed to build one would have placed strict limitations on their use.  Not to mention the inherent difficulties for the person who needed it in being self-propelling when one considers the flooring and paving materials of the time.

Wheelchairs came into muchmore common usage in the 1800s and came to be in their more or less current form in the mid-1900s.  Aside from the advantages in mobility and independence, these products have also helped to force an unwilling world to recognize that a limitation of body did not necessarily equal a limitation of mind, spirit, or personhood.  It helped people with mobility issues to cease being ignored or treated as helpless by society at large.

And as time as has gone on, chairs have been modified to perform all manner of tasks no one would have envisioned even a hundred years ago.  Consider some of the racing and sport formats, and watch someone take his chair up a short flight of stairs without assistance and it is clear that any attempt to shunt someone with a physical limitation into a corner is, as it should be, doomed to failure.

Unfortunately, as valuable as this creation has been in improving the lives of their users, certain other aspects have been ignored.  For example, focusing on the independence of the “rider” has been ignored.  This shows that there is always room for improvement.  Hopefully, this will continue.

One area that has not been focused on as much as it should be is that of wheelchairs that require attendants for legal and security reasons.  Take for example, chair use in hospitals, airports, and other locations where it is necessary to transport people who may be able to walk, just not for long periods of time or require other temporary forms of assistance.  The wheelchair designed for personal use is not always the best format for public use.

Ideally, chairs designed for medical and other short-term transport would be easier for the attendant to push, have easily accessible safety features such as brakes - consider a standard wheelchair if it is not obvious why these aspects could do with altering - and also be designed for ease of transfer.

Not all extant wheelchairs are constructed with the movement of its passenger from one spot to another, such as from it to an airplane seat, exam table, or hospital bed.  Nor are they necessarily equipped say, to hold carry-on bags, portable oxygen, or other such items. Ideally, hospitals, airports, and the like would have access to transport chairs designed for them without losing sight of consideration for the user.

Choosing the Perfect Restaurant Location

November 29th, 2009 by admin

Choosing the absolute perfect restaurant location, both inside and out, is perhaps one of the most important decisions you will ever make during this earliest stage of owning a business. Your restaurant’s physical locale can often mean the difference between staying in business and becoming yet another dire statistic in this ever competitive industry.

There are several varying factors to consider when it comes to choosing a restaurant location such as determining the prospective area’s population base for your startup restaurant. Instead of taking the route of a costly site survey the way a large corporation or chain would, take advantage of the free information available to determine a site’s surrounding population count.

Besides public reports by local governments concerning things like unemployment rates or obtaining information from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), also check census reports, which are done every ten years, and look at housing values before deciding on one particular location over another.

Is the unemployment rate in the area more than four percent? What are houses and commercial properties selling for and what is the general state of the real estate industry in the area? Are there too many sellers but not enough buyers? If so, this could be a clear indicator you should keep looking elsewhere before setting up shop. Also ask yourself what type of attractions, businesses, and institutions are nearby that will help to bring potential customers into your establishment.

Restaurant location is far more than determining the population or population growth of an area as it’s imperative to learn of the surrounding competition and, hopefully, many possible allies that will help to bring about reciprocal business.

If your restaurant is located near several other establishments of differing venues, will there be ample parking to accommodate your guests? People will not want to walk half a mile before reaching their car after dining out, so a nearby, well-lit, and easily accessible parking is a convenience you will definitely want to incorporate into your business. If you won’t be able to have your own lot, ensure there’s one somewhere close for the public to use.

When choosing the ideal location to open a restaurant you’ll also want to consider the matters of accessibility and visibility. Have you ever noticed that there are a plethora of major restaurant chains located just near the exits of major highways, freeways, and thoroughfares? There’s a logical reason for this as more traffic means more customers and the most successful of new restaurants tend to be those that are easy to get to and easy to find.

Securing your restaurant location is a vital step that should be done even before writing business plans, applying for loans, creating menus, and definitely before advertising for customers as this first move is the one that’s most crucial to your new establishment’s success.

Build Your Own Restaurant Business Plan

November 29th, 2009 by admin

Having a thorough and all inclusive restaurant business plan is the first step toward increasing your chances of success in this rather competitive industry. As soon as you’ve decided to open a new restaurant, your next course of action should be writing a restaurant business plan, which is basically a document that you compile based on research you’ve done regarding the restaurant industry.

The first section of any professional restaurant business plan is the “Executive Summary” which should describe your personal background as well as the reasons you have for starting your own company.

Next is the “Mission Statement” where you will list what it is you hope to achieve with your restaurant and your vision for success. You should also mention your company’s values and basic philosophies regarding customer service as well as employee matters. Brand yourself as a part of the community and also as a business that has the potential to be an asset to the surrounding merchants.

The third section of your restaurant business plan should be entitled “Goals” in which you would list in greater detail than in the mission statement about how you plan on progressing and succeeding in the business.

The goals don’t have to be grandiose or even long term but specific enough so that the reader is able to discern how successful you see the restaurant in a set time frame. For instance, write if you intend on doubling the number of customers in six months, or maybe the number of employees, or even your revenue over all, and be sure to cover the next three years.

After the goals you have outlined for your restaurant, your business plan should have a section devoted to “Ownership and Management” where you will describe who owns the business and at what percentage, if applicable, and list a basic structure for hiring new employees as the restaurant, hopefully, gets busier and busier.

“Start-up Costs” are another vital section of a restaurant business plan and this section should list all of the expenses you need to get the restaurant fully running and able to accommodate paying customers. Remember to allow for the inevitable unexpected costs that are sure to arise for a startup restaurant.

Next you should discuss “Funding,” detailing how you plan on funding the start-up phase of business, followed by “Location,” giving reasons as to why one particular area may be more profitable than another.

Other sections to consider putting in your restaurant business plan include “Competitive Analysis,” listing information about all of the other restaurants in the surrounding areas and how you plan on staying competitive, and “Marketing Plan” where you will outline how you intend on advertising and growing the business, and a “Financial Analysis” section with a spreadsheet detailing your expected monthly income as well as expenses.

An effective restaurant business plan can definitely help you to open a restaurant on the right foot and keep you on the path to success, allowing you to possibly achieve your goals even sooner than anticipated.

Green time for the Logo

November 27th, 2009 by admin

Logos to identify green products and packaging are becoming increasingly common, but as manufacturers use a library of more or less similar themes and design devices to indicate how “eco-friendly” their products are such as the green colourway itself, the recycling symbol, nature images etc, the problem will arise of keeping their company logo design looking unique,  that after all is the primary function of a logo, especially in the highly competitive consumer food and drink marketplace. While such green logos and devices have the benefit of providing an immediate indication of green efforts, a plethora of them could lead to consumer confusion and conflict between many brands.

Organisations that have developed their own branded logo do not want others to use it, which means consumers will be forced to make environmental choices, not on the basis of recognised symbols which indicate a product is recyclable for example, but on lots of new, little logos featuring trees, bunnies, whales, dolphins, tractors etc.Manufacturers in the food and drink sectors especially will have to have to keep the environmental information given in their packaging clear and straightforward to keep it easy to dispose of. A green logo in itself is a good thing as it will aid consumer understanding of the efforts made by the company, whether that’s  in ethical sourcing, sustainability or recycling of packaging,  but it must be explained in very clear terms what that symbol means and what it represents.   This is true of the packaging itself, but must also be carried through into other promotional areas like flyer design to publicise the new products.

Packaging firm Tetra Pak for example launched a brand new logo designed to demonstrate the company’s green credentials on its packaging. It featured a rather nice symbol to signify more trees above a ‘minus CO2′ sign, encircled by a ‘renewability matters’ logo.   That seems like a lot of effort to go to when they could have simply used the existing symbols for recyclable packaging, but their argument was using the same symbol that appears on all their competitor’s packages would have diluted Tetra-Pak’s core visual identity.Similarly, the launch of the European Commission’s logo for organic produce scheduled for 2009 was delayed following complaints by German supermarket Aldi that the proposed marque was too similar to their own logo.

Competitors who produce similar products will, of course, prefer to have them easily distinguishable and not have common branding or logos. Equally, if they are really that eager to demonstrate the efforts they are putting into supporting sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint, they face many challenges in communicating that information quickly and simply while maintaining the integrity of their brand through the consistent application of their, often long established, logo. When it comes to green advertising and greening your logo, the key is to keep it simple but informative without changing the brand logo beyond recognition and keeping it as visually consistent with previous iterations while remaining as unique as possible which is certainly not easy. That approach also needs to be carried through into every piece of marketing communications, from advertising hoardings to humble compliment slips, letterheads and branded envelopes.
